Terry Shankle had his hands full during the second week of June. Literally. The all-star defensive back from South Stanly High School in North Carolina attended the Tommy Bowden Clemson football camp and went up against some of the best recruits in the country.

In the Urban Meyer era at the University of Florida, no position has come under as much scrutiny as running back. It’s the job of first year running backs coach Kenny Carter to change the perceptions of that position and it’s a challenge he welcomes. Carter is the kind of coach that actually welcomes preseason criticism because he will use that to motivate his troops to make their critics eat their words once the season is in progress.

Six days of preparation are put to the test once the Florida offense takes the field on Saturday. High above the playing field, armed with charts that track opponents’ tendencies and play lists drawn up to attack anything the defense throws at him, Dan Mullen puts his game plan to the ultimate test. For the next three hours he will be matching wits with some well-prepared defensive coordinator that operates out of a booth just a few yards down the hallway. It is college football’s equivalent of high stakes poker. Mullen has to have a good idea what his counterpart is holding and he better know how to call each bluff.
