A couple of months ago as he stood outside the James W. “Bill” Heavner Football Complex, which was still under construction at the time, Urban Meyer was moved almost to tears. Carved into granite bricks were the names of each Gator that has been selected first team All-American. As he thought about each of those players and the sacrifices they made to the football program at the University of Florida, Meyer admits he was overwhelmed.

Friday marked the official opening of the James W. "Bill" Heavener Football Complex at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. The new facilities feature a trophy room, Gator Room to host up to 200 visitors, coaches' offices, weight room and a remodeled locker room.

As the nation's most talked about camp approaches the start time on Friday, the University of Florida is preparing to host one of, if not the most impressive rosters for a one-session camp in the country. Friday Night Lights has become synonymous with star power in its first three years since Urban Meyer began it back in 2005. Edition number four of Friday Night Lights will crank up around 7 p.m. in The Swamp with a number of the top recruits for 2009 attending as well as some of the best for next year’s class of 2010.

Not that Urban Meyer really cares what the critics have to say about him, but four years ago the same folks that were calling his spread option offense a loony concoction that would work only against a bunch of matadors and never against a decent defense were saying Friday Night Lights had all the earmarks of a desperate act by a desperate man. Wouldn’t work, they said. Others were saying kids would see right through it, that it was the recruiting equivalent of Meyer kicking the stool out from under himself so he could dangle by a rope.

Everybody knew Erik Murphy could shoot from the outside. Everybody already knew about the silky smooth jumper whose range he has extended all the way out to the three-point line through a lot of hard work. Everybody also knew that Murph is a real hustler who runs like a gazelle up and down the floor. What we didn’t know is that he’s got a terrific inside game, that he’s almost equally good with either hand from close range and that while he might be a tad on the thin side, he’s wiry strong and isn’t afraid to stick an elbow into the solar plexus of someone trying to get a little too rough.
