Lo Wood came to Friday Night Lights ready to show Florida’s coaches that all the hype about how he can lock down a receiver is for real. He might be only 5-10 and 168 pounds but he’s tough, physical and ever so willing to jam receivers at the line of scrimmage. If they get past the jam, he has the speed and instincts to cover. By the time he had showed off all he could do Friday night, he was getting plenty of love from the Florida coaches.

It’s still a learning process for Jon Bostic, a former cornerback and safety who has outgrown those positions and settled in at linebacker. He’s 6-2 and 225 pounds and while he has been a very productive linebacker, he knows there is so much to learn. That’s why he viewed Friday Night Lights as a chance to take a few steps forward in this ongoing transition.

The Florida Gators put their best foot forward for Gastonia Ashbrook wide receiver Jheranie Boyd (6-3, 190) and Charlotte Victory Christian defensive tackle Curtis Porter (6-2, 330) Friday. The two stars from North Carolina were given the tour of the campus and the new football complex but what stood out was a Friday Night Lights experience that makes the Gators much more than a blip on the recruiting radar.

They come from as far away as Texas on this warm July evening, all of them driven by a dream and a burning desire to attract the attention of Urban Meyer and his Florida football staff. This is Friday Night Lights, a football soiree that attracts so many kids with so many stars after their names that The Swamp becomes a mini-galaxy. There are five star kids with so many scholarship offers they need an accounting firm to keep track of them all and there are kids who have slipped under everybody’s radar, hoping they can show up one these five stars so much that Meyer feels compelled to tender an offer.

Ian Silberman doesn’t like to wait and when it came to making a college commitment, this 6-5, 275-pound offensive tackle from Fleming Island couldn’t find one good reason for patience. The Florida Gators offered him a scholarship and he said yes. There wasn’t a need for thinking things over because Silberman had the only scholarship offer he ever wanted or needed.
