A few questions with OG James Wilson

Back in the spring, James Wilson was a hot topic. Would he stay or would he transfer to Wake Forest? By the end of the spring he was all Gator and now that fall practice has arrived, all he can think about is working as hard as he can to get on the field in 2008.

A few questions with DE Carlos Dunlap

After a breakout spring that concluded with a dominating pass rushing performance in the Orange and Blue game, Carlos Dunlap has the Gator Nation thinking back to the days when another freaky athlete named Jevon Kearse was terrorizing quarterbacks. Dunlap spent a few minutes with Gator Country after practice Monday afternoon.

VIDEO: Freshmen highlights from the morning

The Florida Gators started dark and early Monday morning on their newest trek to become college football's best team. It was the rookies who got to wake up early and experience the night time under the lights at Florida's practice field and the few fans in attendance came away impressed for the most part at the look of the young guns. Gator Country was there to film most of the drills the freshmen went through.

Something to prove

On what was just another first day of football practice all over the country, rivers of sweat poured off number 70 as he went through the drills at the north end of the field. He was out there with a bunch of freshmen and although he was obviously older than everybody else, he played with the kind of enthusiasm you might expect of a walk-on with something to prove.

Good start for freshman defenders

I caught myself in an unusually happy mood this morning on the way to a practice that began before the sun rose in the east. Usually if I’m watching the sun rise it’s because someone or something has kept me up all night. I think my good mood was there because for the first time in several years --- yes even the championship season --- I can envision special things from this Gator football team. This was a practice of freshmen and most of them won’t even contribute much this season but still, I’m caught up in the excitement about a team that has a chance to be very, very good. Watching the freshmen who play on the defensive side of the ball, I came away thinking that this program is in good shape for many years to come.

Great Expectations: The defensive line

For the Florida Gators to become a dominating defense in 2008, the guys up front are going to have to become a force once again. After a 2007 in which the Gators had problems getting pressure on the quarterback, Florida begins practice with a roster loaded with talented defensive linemen. There is no shortage of strong, able bodies but will that translate into on the field performance? There is more depth than ever before at defensive tackle and at the end positions, there is a marvelous combination of size and speed. If everything comes together the Gators can have a ferocious front four.

Freshmen get first chance to show off

Maybe it was only a few drills that lasted 90 minutes. Maybe it wasn’t anything to really hang your hat on, but it was football and for Florida’s freshmen and walk-ons, it was a chance to show the coaching staff that they’re eager and ready to start proving themselves. Even without a scholarship quarterback on hand, the offensive drills showed there is plenty of talent among the youngsters.

Love Letters from Georgia

Was it something I said? I write a simple little column entitled “Hey Mark Richt! Your nose is growing” and you would think Pearl Harbor got bombed the way the Poodle nation responded. Funny, but they seem to think they’re in the heads of every Florida Gator. I’ll let you judge for yourself but it seems to me they’re just a bunch of legends in their own minds.
