Will “The Thrill” Hill came to the University of Florida engulfed in hype. He was already expected to compete for a starting position but when safeties Dorian Munroe and John Curtis went down for the season with injuries, it put much more pressure on Hill to produce from day one. In just two days of practice, he’s already made several big plays and he’s taking on the look of a starter at strong safety. Gator Country caught up with Hill for a few questions Tuesday afternoon.

Justin Trattou saw the field early and often last season as a true freshman. As a sophomore he figures to step into a Ray McDonald-like role, which means he will play up and down the line, both at defensive end and at the two tackle positions depending on the mismatches he can create. Gator Country caught up with Trattou Monday for a few questions about the upcoming season.

It’s in the air. You can smell it, like Old Money. These hot August days with the oppressive heat and the annoying gnats otherwise reek with a fresh spirit and hearty anticipation.

Florida’s offensive line had plenty to do with the fact the Gators ran the most efficient offense in the country last year. Sure, they had a few rough moments along the way but for the better part of 13 games they rocked, rolled and pounded away so well that the quarterback earned the Heisman Trophy and the offense scored on half its possessions. All that was done with a line that was replacing three starters from the year before and was without its senior anchor, left tackle Phil Trautwein. Trautwein is back from the injury that kept him out in 2007 and he believes the sky is the limit for Florida’s offense.

Welcome to Head-to-Head, Gator Country’s new analytical series that will take a look at key positional matchups that are taking place on the practice field. There are key battles going on at numerous positions now that practice has begun. Here is a look at two key battles taking place on the interior defensive line. Obviously, this is a first look and what we’re going to report is largely based on who’s in the best physical condition and showing the most quickness. We’d love to follow these matchups all the way through until game one but we won’t have the luxury of seeing them in pads. Still, here is a good look at what we saw today and how some critical matchups are looking straight out of the chute.

Eduardo Clements may only be a junior at Miami’s Booker T. Washington High School but he’s already looking at which colleges could be his future home. While nearby Coral Gables and the Miami Hurricanes are close, he feels comfortable, too, in Gainesville, the home of the Florida Gators.

Fall practice is finally here and that means some real battles in camp and questions that need to be answered. I think the Florida Gators have plenty of talent and lots of options as they enter what Urban Meyer believes will be the toughest fall camp in America. Meyer knows he’s got a team that has the potential to win another national championship and it will all start with the offense.

The freshmen, being that they’re freshman and probably unfamiliar with the unwritten code of the fast and the furious, probably didn’t know about rules number one and two when they set up the 40-yard match race of the summer that took place behind the dorms where most of them live a few weeks ago. Rule number one: never race a street racer on the streets. Rule number two: pick and choose your distance carefully. If they only knew the rules then maybe they wouldn’t be trying to talk up a rematch between their chosen one, Jeffrey Demps, and the undisputed --- depending on whose version of which story you choose to believe --- king of the street race, Chris Rainey.

Florida’s first practice of August got started ahead of the scheduled starting time Monday afternoon. Maybe that was a sign of things to come because it was a very solid practice turned in by the returning veterans. Most of the position rotational spots stayed the same, but there were a few notable changes. There are still going to be some ongoing questions at tackle and safety.

Expectations are that the Florida Gators will field the most explosive offense in the nation in 2008. With a big, mobile offensive line to clear a path for a Heisman Trophy quarterback and some skill players with as much speed and elusiveness that you can find, the Gators look like a team that is loaded and ready to slice and dice any defense in the nation. At Monday’s first practice, it was hard to determine how far the Gators have come since last year since they weren’t in pads but the speed was astounding.

Camp Meyer doesn’t begin until Friday night when the Florida Gators check into the team hotel where they will stay until school starts, but the next few days of practice will give him a chance to evaluate a lot of the young players on his roster. It has been a quiet offseason for Meyer and the Gators and that only added to the anticipation of Monday’s opening day of fall football practice.
