Video Interview: TJ Pridemore

The Gators start 2008 having to replace last season's starting fullback. They spent a great deal of time recruiting the position for the 2008 class and ended up better than they ever thought they would when Buford (GA) fullback T.J. Pridemore (6-2, 240) decided he wanted to be a Gator. Pridemore has a lot to learn in the Gators offense but he has jumped right in with a little help from some of the veterans on the Gator squad.

A few questions with DE Matt Patchan

Few linemen have ever arrived at Florida with the hype of Matt Patchan. A US Army All-American out of Seffner Armwood, Patchan shunned Miami, where his dad played college football for the Gators, arriving in Gainesville in January so he could participate in spring practice. Patchan had mononucleosis last year and suffered both a gunshot wound and a torn pectoral muscle during the summer. He’s starting to regain his health and could be a factor on the defensive line this fall. Gator Country caught up with Patchan for a few questions Tuesday.

Head-to-Head: The battle at safety

Today’s Head-to-Head matchup is the battle for the starting safety positions. Due to injuries and attrition, the safety landscape has changed dramatically since the spring. Dorian Munroe and John Curtis blew out ACL’s, Jamar Hornsby was dismissed from the team and Bryan Thomas had a cyst removed from his knee so he won’t be able to begin practice for another couple of weeks. For the moment at least, that leaves three veterans and one true freshman to battle it out although true freshman T.J. Lawrence has been move over from wide receiver and Coach Urban Meyer is considering cross-training true freshman Janoris Jenkins to play both corner and safety.

Meyer encouraged by D-line play

Dan McCarney, formerly the head coach at Iowa State and just last year the coach that turned George Selvie from a third string center into a first team All-America defensive end at Iowa State, is the new task master for Florida’s defensive linemen. He runs a high energy practice with plenty of emphasis on fundamentals and pass rush skills.

VIDEO: Tuesday afternoon highlights

On a day when the defense had some highlight reel moments, the offense also made some big plays. Tuesday was a mixed bag for the Florida Gators. Their day two practice, which included the entire squad on a very hot afternoon at the practice fields, saw improved play by the secondary but there were some big plays in the passing game, too. Here are exclusive video highlights from Tuesday afternoon.

Tuesday afternoon: Offensive report

Expectations are that the Florida Gators will field one of the most potent offenses in the country in 2008 but Tuesday was a day that the defense made more and bigger plays. It wasn’t a great day for quarterbacks although a few deep balls found their way into the hands of the receivers.

Tuesday afternoon: Defensive report

Watching Florida’s cornerbacks going head-to-head with what is probably the best set of wide receivers in the country, you had to wonder why there are so many concerns about the position. Tuesday afternoon they were flying all over the field, tipping passes and making plays. In the two-minute drill, the corners more than held their own and only a couple of exceptional offensive plays kept the defense from winning.

Jordan Reed calls it for the Gators

The stats are not gaudy but they are still quite impressive. More impressive than stats is Jordan Reed’s presence on the field. He’s a difference maker, whether it’s with his arm, his feet or his leadership. Now Reed will bring all those qualities to the University of Florida. He committed to Coach Urban Meyer and the Gators Tuesday.
