The 2008 season is not all that far away and it will be a season where quarterback Tim Tebow will be looking for an encore performance for the Florida Gators. With Tebow leading the way the Gators were at times unstoppable on offense. He became the first 20-20 quarterback in college football history and oh yes, he won the Heisman Trophy. The question is can Tim Tebow get any better? Can he improve his game? How does he avoid the post-Heisman letdown? I think Tebow can get better and become a more complete all-around leader of the Gator attack.

Dreams hardly imagined possible 20 years ago have already been realized by Gator sports fans. Just 12 years ago Florida had never won a national championship in football or basketball, which now almost feels like life in the dark ages.

Dan Mullen has the one job that nearly every offensive coordinator in Division I football would kill to have. He’s got a space age offense that spreads the field and makes even the best of defenses vulnerable and he’s got the personnel to make every game a dial-a-score affair when the game plan comes together. He’s got the Heisman Trophy quarterback in Tim Tebow, the most feared open field player in the college game in Percy Harvin and perhaps more speed at the skill positions than any offensive coordinator in the country. Up front he’s got a big, nasty offensive line that is as comfortable in a road grader mentality as it is in the finesse and nuances of pass protection. He’s got the offense and he’s got the players to make it work which might explain the smile that never seems to leave his face.

File the 2007 football season under been there, done that, don’t want to ever do that again for Florida defensive coordinator Charlie Strong. Inexperience will do that for you and that’s the mess Strong had on his hands last year. He had only two returning starters from the 2006 team, whose defense proved it was the best in the nation the way it systematically destroyed Ohio State in the BCS National Championship Game. Worse yet, those two starters were also the only two players with any kind of game experience on something other than special teams.

William Green is a man of few words. He would rather let his play on the field do all the talking for him. One of the nation’s most highly recruited defensive ends out of Hoover (AL) Spain Park, Green will be heading to Gainesville in just a few days and he’s excited about the move. All except for one thing. Green loves to train, but from what he’s heard about Florida strength and conditioning coach Mickey Marotti, he knows he better be prepared to run the stadium steps and plenty of gassers.

DESTIN --- His voice is a deep, rich baritone. He doesn’t have to yell or scream to get his point across. There is such power in Sylvester Croom’s words that even when he speaks in tones that are barely audible, you feel the strength. You listen to him and think to yourself that if you could hear the voice of God, this is what it would sound like.

T.J. Lawrence and Lakeland Kathleen football coach Irving Strickland were skeptical as their final visit with the Florida coaching staff began and who blame them? With a depth chart full of wide receivers destined for stardom in Gainesville, it would be easy for a high school wide receiver to question if he would have a chance to get on the field anytime soon, much less get a chance to actually touch the football and make some plays.

After a season in which opponents found a lot of success picking on the Florida secondary, the Gators are looking to rebound with much improved play in 2008. During the offseason, Urban Meyer hired Vance Bedford, formerly of Michigan, to coach the corners while moving Chuck Heater to coach the safeties. This new arrangement seemed to work well in the spring when the young corners looked far more mature and played with much more confidence. Bedford seems quite happy with the progress that was made and he’s looking for even more progress in the fall.

DESTIN --- Tommy Tuberville is seriously thinking about offering a scholarship to an eighth grader. He knows the kid very well and has seen him play a number of times since he lives within shouting distance of Jordan-Hare Stadium at Auburn University. Tuberville thinks the young man is going to be a Division I football player someday but there is a slight problem. Tuberville can’t talk to the kid without mom around.

The numbers don’t lie. Take a look at the success of Florida’s 2007 offense and those staggering numbers tell a story of an offensive line that got the job done game in and game out. The Gators might put up offensive numbers in 2008 that make the 2007 numbers pale in comparison and if that happens the men in the trenches will have done their job once again. When it comes to his 2008 line, Coach Steve Addazio returns four starters and more depth than he’s ever had at Florida so he knows this unit could turn out to be very special.

One of the most frequently-asked questions I’ve fielded about Florida’s upcoming season is “can Percy Harvin win the Heisman?” This is a great question, considering the fact that Tim Tebow is still on campus and he won it a year ago. Recent history shows us it can be done with Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush pulling it off at Southern California. Percy has the talent and UF has the offense to showcase him for the big trophy and I think UF will make an extra effort to get Harvin into the mix.

How bad was the injury bug that plagued Florida’s wide receivers during spring football practice back in March and April? Everybody knows all about the number of dinged up players and the serious heel surgery that superstar Percy Harvin had but wide receivers coach Billy Gonzales had to coach through some serious pain, too. Gonzales had shoulder surgery after spring practice and he was scheduled to have a second surgery on that shoulder Monday.

DESTIN --- When it comes to the NCAA, its many rule books and its complicated web of rules, it’s probably best to apply a time-honored theory about the weather and Oklahoma, the one that says if you don’t like the weather, wait 15 minutes. Les Miles can relate. He understands that the NCAA is well meaning about its many rules, but he wouldn’t mind seeing some consistency.

DESTIN --- There will be no early signing period in the Southeastern Conference after all. Friday morning, the SEC’s 12 athletic directors listened to a proposal by the football coaches to initiate an early signing period but after debating the pros and cons, the athletic directors voted against it.
