Next stop Oklahoma City!

The celebration lasted all of about one minute. Everybody on the field and in the dugout sprinted to the middle of the infield where they hugged and jumped up and down for a bit. And then it was over. The Florida Gators had won the Gainesville Super Regional and it was almost as if they were already turning their focus toward next week and the College World Series in Oklahoma City.

Gators within one game of CWS

Stacey Nelson was walking the pitcher’s version of the tightrope Friday afternoon against a pesky California team that wasn’t exactly tearing the cover off the ball but still getting runners in scoring position. From the fourth inning on, Nelson seemed perpetually in trouble, always one pitch away from disaster. But, as the Golden Bears found out, it’s one thing to get runners in scoring position against the Florida ace. It’s another thing altogether to bring them home.

The art of the bunt

In the bottom of the first inning in Florida’s second game in the Gainesville Regional championship bracket last Sunday afternoon, Kim Waleszonia led off for the Florida Gators and everybody in the ball park knew she was going to bunt. UCF’s first and third basemen were practically on top of her by the time Allison Kime’s first pitch reached the plate. Waleszonia dropped her bat on the ball, a perfect bunt that probably dribbled about four feet. UCF’s catcher was cat-quick coming out of her stance but even with that quick start and a throw that had some muscle behind it there was no catching Waleszonia.
